slot = need for a new owner, and perhaps when that need arrives, I would be invited to partake in fulfillment of this responsibility.  So, there are slots.  Just on a as needed basis and not a numbers basis.  Same with membership.  If someone wants to sponser you that's an owner...you're recruited.  Else, only if the owners decide there needs to be more or new replacement members. 

I think it's a matter of logistics.  You see.  the word slot is easier to say than all of the above.  However, you are correct since it doesn't communicate the author's intended use of the word.
