What is anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering?

This is a very very good article, and yeah I think those terms are thrown around without concern that not everybody knows what this stuff means.
And this kind of thing needs both test pattern examples and real world examples, all the explanation in the world isn't going to match a picture example.
