Which HDD should I get?

So I need one of these to boot XP off of, since I only have PATA drives.

I have only tried Western Digitals so can't speak for Seagate - but never had any issues with my WDs after years of heavy use.  I recently bought a new pair of HDDs and reviews were strongly in favor of WD over other brands.

For the exception of the Raptor series I would never buy a WD drive. I would buy Seagate. Seagate drives also come with 5yr Warranties which is the longest warranty for any consumer grade HD out there.

Seagate = POS. No warranty would make me buy them........unless I needed an over priced paperweight.

Everything is a personal preference. I have 3 seagate drives and they have been running long after the warranty has ended. And I have had WD drives which died constantly. But things change and technology changes. Seagate is one of the leading manufacturers of enterprise class drives and they have used that technology in there consumer products. Seagates Barracuda drive out performs the Raptor drive and just about all others.

Well here is an opinion from someone that actually works in the storage industry.

I have used all brands of drives and honestly they all break and fail at some point.  Your drive might have been from a bad batch of drives.  By bad batch it could be a certain part in the drive itself that is bad like bearings or what not.

I use a raptor X drive in my gaming box and I will upgrade to a velociraptor here very shortly.  I also use Seagate drives in everything else that I have and for my main storage array.

Now to put this on the table my company is 20% owned by Seagate, but that does not mean I will only use their drives as I use a WD in my gaming rig.

I have over 8TB of storage space at home that is all Seagate and I have had 1 drive go bad.  Well out of 50+ drives that are spinning all the time that is not bad if you ask me as I do not have them in ideal conditions like a true data center and the ambient temperature is not what it should be for ideal performance and working conditions. 


So in conclusion is one brand better then another, no not really unless you buy cheap shit or the bottom end drive.  It is all a matter or personal opinion when it comes to the brand of drive though.

I have a 12TB array sitting behind me that has all Seagate 15K rpm SAS drives in it. I can't even find where WD makes a 15k drive anymore, or anything SAS for that matter.

I would buy a WD at home for sure... price and performance is great. But I also really like seagate's high end stuff...

I have heard people swear by Maxtor drives before too... but I won't touch em. All preference.
