I know The Elders Rules me!

« : April 15, 2008, 09:45:43 AM »

Came home from work last night and my son had somehow managed to put the new pc in hibernate mode.  When I got it back to normal mode I could not get an internet connection.  I tried toggling between both network cards but it still came back with something along the lines of 'unidentified network connection' and 'local connection only'.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  I am running Vista 64bit Ultimate edition.  I tried rebooting but to no avail.  When I run ipconfig I get nothing ip addresses.  I cannot even connect to the router which I know works cause the other computer and my DVR are connected and online.

Usaually that stuff comes back after a reboot. I've never heard of it not coming back from hibernation but it is Vista.

So I have to ask.  Is this a full legal copy of Vista or the one from the FTP Server?

i am currently having that problem also and believe that if you connection has too many splitters on the line it will degrade the signal try bringing the router to where the connection enters the home and try it there and see if that corrects the problem

The thing is that your internal router should give you an IP address no matter if you high speed connection is workig or not.  I can unplug my cable modem and my router will still give out IP Addresses.

I do not have a modem, just a router.  I have two computers side by side, an xbox360 and my Directv HDDVR connected to the router.  The other three devices connect no problem, its just the Vista computer than cannot get out.  Like I said before, I cannot even access the router.  Was hoping for some sort of solution other than reformatting.

I assume your not getting an ip address? if thats the case i would check to make sure the tcp/ipv4 protocol under the adapter is still installed, and none of the wake on lan settings are enabled, i've seen a couple vista pc's that get screwy with those turned on

can also check the winsock configuration. I know if it gets corrupt you can't do much in terms of network.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/19/reinstall-and-reset-tcpip-internet-protocol-in-windows-vista-2003-and-xp/

try those out

I feel your pain Death, I still have not gotten my resolved either.  I tried the 2 things from Widow's post but no luck.  I'm gonna try to reformat and see what happens.  The only thing I will lose through the reformat is the steam and COD4 but those can be reinstalled quickly.

Deathhaven, I wish you lived closer as I would have you drop it off or I could pick it up from you and try to get it working.  I keep looking everyday on the MS Knowledgebase, but I keep coming up with no new things to try.
