So after 2 years here I finally got admitted to the professional business college on campus. Only problem is I have to declare a specific aspect of business that I want to major in before the end of the semester. I've narrowed it down to 3 so far; Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship. Here's the pro's and con's as far as I see them for each

Marketing: A lot of fun. I love doing ad campaigns and it gives me a chance to be creative. On the downside there's not much room to move up as far as income and advancement is concerned. And if I plan on getting an MBA it wont really add as much with a marketing background as it would with say management or entrepreneurship.

Management: My safe bet. Plenty of opportunities for advancement and the potential income is basically endless. The professional college on campus is ranked #21 (public and private) and #13 (public) in the nation when specializing in management. Downside is it doesn't really sound too interesting.

Entrepreneurship: The idea of having my own business is extremely appealing. The professional college for entrepreneurship here is #2 (public and private) and #1 (just public) ranked in the nation. It has a lot of potential downsides though. First off you need a great idea to even start the business and if its a bad idea or not original you're not going to make any money. That and it's hit or miss. You either end up really successful in your venture or you end up severely in debt with a dead business. But on the plus side out of the 3 coupled with an MBA it has the potential to make the most money, plus the fact that you're in charge of your own business.

So what do you guys think? Thoughts? Opinions? Hah I'm lost I really cant decide between the 3

wonder.

Hmm, hard decision to make.  All three seem like good choices.  Most of my family is in marketing, and i have to say, it seems like an aspect of buisness that really has developed, and there is a chance to make a good amount of money.  Especially in PR now.  Management is always good because there are many opportunities, but at the same time, it  is still alittle general.  And Entrepreneurship seems like a good choice, but there is alot more risk involved, and alot more work.  If you own your own business you stand a chance at making a real lot of money, but at the same time, it will be alot of work, and you can work at it, and it may not become that successful.  So, as a safe bet, and a good choice, I would have to go with Marketing.  thats my $.02

Cro,

Ya gotta do what you love and love what you do.

I know it sounds corny but whats the point of having all of this money and not being happy.

I voted for management even though it is a pain in the ass. The reason i picked that is because you could potentially be a manager of a marketing division with that degree? Regardless I am a Bioscience guy so someone like you would be telling me what to do, kinda ironic.

EDIT: Talk to Hammer I think he's getting his MBA right now or something like that.

I voted entrepreneurship.  Be your own boss.  If your looking for business ideas rent the movie Risky Business.
My friend here,, has been running his operation smoothly for years now.  Just remember:  Sometimes you have to say "What the fuck!!!"  Good luck to you.

None of the above.

Get a degree in petroleum engineering or geology. If you wanna make the big bucks, it's the way to go. Think about it for a sec..Oil, natural gas and coal (the big three) will be something that is in demand for many years to come and as long as there is a need for fossil fuels, there will be a need for qualified personel to fill these jobs. What most of the younger set dont know is 90% of the people in my vocation are 50 plus years old and many are retiring daily with a lack of experienced replacments because all of these retirees and those near to the age have been in the business for the last 30 years.... Their jobs havent been on the market in a long time and since there were "enough" guys my dad's age to go around, the companies didnt agressively attempt to train new people or even make an effort to look for more.

Now in the last few years natural resource development has exploded, and an experienced person can pretty much write their own tickett. Companies compete for us, often times getting in bidding wars for our services, which means more $$ in our pocket with the bottom line. They especially love younger people (grads) and treat them like gold because they know how hard a replacment is to find. Most think our work is boring or uneventful, so they never give a career in this field a second thought. As far as money is concerned, I started out 10 years ago making $150 a day plus expenses. When my new contract goes into effect Jan. 1 08, it will be $400 a day plus expenses. (thats 8k a month vs. the 6.5k I get now) In the last four years we have been experiencing an average of 20% a year increase in our day rates. If things keep going, it's hard to imagine what they will be five years from now.
