If its an on-board AC97 you should be golden....download the latest version of your motherboard drivers (sound drivers should be included) and install them all. BTW, if your running XP then why do you have a drive on FAT32? Is it a drive from an old system? If you can reformat it to NTFS this may help your performance a bit.

when i bought the pc, it was pre-built , and it had windows XP on it. So when i reformated it like yesterday , i used a xp home cd. And its not detecting my sound card , i've tried downloaded the updated drivers but i can't find a website that explains things in golden terms , the only thing i found was on my Compaq's website, was an updated bios version. The only thing that is not working is the sound though, think my sound card became fried in the reformating process? i wouldnt think so thouhg mainly because its detecting that is is there!! :D btw thanks for the quick response smurf.

If it sees it, but it's not working or has a question mark in the device manager, then it's probably a driver issue...since it's a compaq thats an issue too LOL j/k HP actually makes compaq computers now so you might want to check out their support site as well....whats your PC model number?

Try going through this and see if it helps...it is for your specific desktop (I think)

heres an update on my situation, turns out my computer is not recognizing any sound device located in it, i went to the site above that you suggested smurf and found a step by step way to find out what it is and the screen is blank. So i wonder if i update my driver if it will recognize it only problem is i can't find a site that has the download for it.

I had a problem with that as well.  After reading some forums they decided it was the mobo...i also have an asus mobo like you do.  No saying that IS the problem but it COULD be.

PS:  Take out your two sticks of 256mb ram...it's slowing you down if it's what came with the computer stock.

What the fuck is this shit???
