I been looking up some of the same issues, most are occured from a GFX card issue, drivers out of date, dvi cable...I checked all this and when I start up in normal mode its just my blank monitor..sometimes it goes in standby mode for the monitor.

I can only start up the computer in VGA mode  and safe mode, If I change the resolution in VGA mode the monitor will go black again.

i had the same problem couple months ago.  i couldnt figure out what it was, so i upgraded video cards (was gonna do it anyway, just sooner) and havent had that issue since.  Merk had somewhat similiar problem.  it wound up being the dvi converter in his monitor was blewn.  once he hooked it up with VGA cable it worked.
