Title: Highlander Challenge
Post by: SaumonFrAgile on August 22, 2010, 12:23:44 PM
Hi everyone!

First I'd like you to look at this real quick:
http://etf2l.org/highlander/ (http://etf2l.org/highlander/)

Looks pretty cool right?

That's why I'm trying to get a team together and go win this tournament!

And to do that, I need your help!

Since it's a 9v9 tournament, I obviously need a team of 10-14 people to register.

I already have 4 players (including myself) and 2 people who told me they could be extras, so that's already about half way done.

Classes have not been distributed yet. As the signups close on August 26th, I figured I should focus on getting players first.

Matches start on September 12th, and are generally held on Sunday evening CET (which should be sunday around noon in America if I'm not mistaken) according to the website.

If you're interested, leave a post in this thread :)

I was thinking about this a while back. If you need someone, I'd be willing to be that someone.

Well, I DO need someone, so I'm glad you want to be that someone!

I'm up for this, it should be a great experience.

I'm down if you guys need a medic or soldier.  I can sub for most other classes except sniper.

This sounds like fun. I'd be interested in playing but I don't know if my connection could handle playing on a European server. I should find one to test.

Post by: Rally Pig on August 23, 2010, 07:16:13 AM
we tried cevo and got beat up pretty bad months back, but it says "This tournament is strictly for people who are new to competitive play" so should be interesting and I would be willing to try as long as the matches are a weekend deal (i have crappy work hours, normally not on till late on week days), im a little stronger at pyro, heavy, sniper...

Post by: SaumonFrAgile on August 23, 2010, 02:12:22 PM
Wow, thank you all for your answers. We just might get enough players in time!

So we are now at 8 players and 2 "extras". Just one more confirmed and I can register the team!

If weekend play only, I am definitely in.  Good at pyro and soldier.  Crap at spy, sniper and scout.  Decent with other classes.

Post by: Hare Doctor on August 23, 2010, 03:08:27 PM
My ping was good on the Euro servers I tested.

I mostly play Medic, but would play anything except spy.
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge
Post by: SaumonFrAgile on August 23, 2010, 04:18:07 PM
Well this is great! If I count well, we have a full 11-man team!

The team so far:

ZaK
Shifty
Taso
crazydog
DiscoStan
Hare Doctor
Rally Pig
Luggage
and of course me.

Extras:
dimkris
Smurfette

This is perfect! I'll wait until tomorrow to see if we can get one or two more extras, but otherwise the team will be registered with the people mentioned before.

The next step I guess will be to determine roles, but that can wait until tomorrow.

I'd be interested if I thought it would work. I've seen time and time again competitive teams try to get together here and it doesn't work. We're too far apart, and we're all adults with lives. Not to be the wet blanket, but I speak from experiance. I'll wish you good luck and hope you prove me wrong!
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge
Post by: SaumonFrAgile on August 23, 2010, 04:28:15 PM
Well after checking, we can have a maximum of 14 players registered. So if anyone still wants to join just say so!

And I really hope to prove you wrong GFH :P
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge

I'll play scout, solly, or spy.

I just realized that depending on the timing (if euro players, euro time slots, etc) I might be busy with work/day stuff. So I would probably be better as a sub. OH well.
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge
Post by: crazydog on August 23, 2010, 10:21:13 PM
Taso, that's not OUR team page, that's just the list of 'your' teams, so if any of us click that, we see an empty list since we aren't in a team.

I tried fixing that but the website crashed..

Now it says we're not authorized to access this team.

I think you, as the team owner, needs to manually add us.

I removed your "great buddy" status because of its definition in the rules (someone in a high-level league giving a hand in organizing the team).

However you should still be in the team.

Since not everyone signed up on http://etf2l.org we still need one person to make a 10-man team.

Deadline is tomorrow, or in 2 hours if they use European time.

So as of now, we need more players and welcome your application.

Ah, here's our team: http://etf2l.org/teams/11434/

How do we get verified?
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge

Why am I and my teammates listed as unverified on the team page?

Whenever a player is added to a team, they are listed as unverified for 24 hours. This is to stop people from adding new players onto their team right before a league game without anyone noticing. After 24 hours they will automatically be verified.

Do we plan to use vent for this? I can't use the TE vent channel because it has a codec that's not compatible with my OS.

Hey Hitman Smurf, have you considered changing codecs on the channel?
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge

Sweet, registered for the Feared team. I can do medic, pocket soldier, or heavy. Any other class you can probably find someone who would be a much better choice than me.

Alright, so now that we have a full team, we should start talking about roles.

Based on forum posts, I made this: (O means good, X means bad, - means no info)
Sc So Py De He En Sn Me Sp
Crazydog     X  -  -  O  -  O  X  O  -
Hare Doctor  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  O  X
Saumon       X  -  O  -  O  X  X  O  X
Taso         O  O  -  -  -  -  -  -  O
Rally        -  -  O  -  O  -  O  -  -
Slimez       -  -  -  O  -  -  O  -  -
Disco        -  O  -  -  O  -  X  O  -
Luggage      X  O  O  -  -  -  X  -  X
Zak          O  -  -  -  O  O  -  -  -
Shifty       -  O  -  O  -  -  -  -  -
dimkris      -  -  O  -  O  X  X  -  X

So I made a possible lineup:

Scout : Zak
Soldier: Shifty
Pyro   : Luggage
Demo : Slimez
Heavy : DiscoStan
Engie : Crazydog
Sniper : RallyPig
Medic : Saumon
Spy : Taso

This is in no way a final lineup: feel free to tell me how to modify it to make this team the best.

Nice "check list" as for Time zone the matches take place in the CET/CEST time zone which is 6 hours ahead of US EST, Here is the rules page http://etf2l.org/rules/highlander-rules/ (http://etf2l.org/rules/highlander-rules/)

Just a quick note to say that even if our first match is supposed to be tomorrow, the website still says teams haven't been placed in divisions yet and the challenge is not in the upcoming events. Trying to figure wtf is going on.

The groups are listed here: http://etf2l.org/2010/09/12/highlander-challenge-provisional-groups/

We are apparently in group 150 along with actor. (http://etf2l.org/teams/9585/) and BIG (http://etf2l.org/teams/10865/). Both teams are mostly US players. Maybe that will make scheduling easier.

I'd still like to be a starter but I also don't mind being a sub if everyone else is going to be online. Just for the info board, I think I'm better as pyro or scout and worse as sniper or engy. Heavy and demo I'm middle of the road but I like those classes too.

Do we know which superset of maps we'll be playing?  If we do, perhaps we can try to keep those in rotation and try to get our guys on the same team when playing pub.  12 per team is very different from 7 per team but will at least get us used to each other a bit and improve communications.

Okay cool.

This was in the highlander rules:
Quote
    *  Group round 1: 1. Gravelpit 2. Upward
    * Group round 2: 1. Gravelpit 2. Freight
    * Group round 3: 1. Badwater 2. Badlands
    * Playoff stage:
    * Round of One Hundred Twenty-Eight: 1. Badwater 2. Granary
    * Round of Sixty-Four: 1. Goldrush 2. Freight 3. Viaduct
    * Round of Thirty-Two: 1. Dustbowl 2. Upward 3. Viaduct
    * Round of Sixteen: 1. Badlands 2. Granary 3. Viaduct
    * Quarter Final: 1. Gravelpit 2. Goldrush 3. Viaduct
    * Semi Final: 1. Dustbowl 2. Badwater 3. Viaduct
    * Final: Both teams pick one map, possible Decider Map by Map Elimination Mode
Freight pops out as a map that could be played more often on the server.

Oh god upward and gravelpit..maps that i don't like, but oh well.

but it think its stop watch mode? plus if we are using ours we have to make sure its password protected during matches....plus if thats the case maybe we can kiss some butt and get a slot open just for this cause overall i dont know if we'll beable to shut the sever down for matches...no offense to anyone but its not 100% TE so it may cause minor issues (i doubt it but always a facitor)

The link Taso provided is unavailable for non-leaders. Here's the public match page: http://etf2l.org/matches/20817/ (http://etf2l.org/matches/20817/)

So apparently we're on badlands. We're trying to get the match on saturday, but for now it's set on sunday.

I'll post more when I'm out of class, but I'll rearrange the starting lineup.

I found out that I can use vent, so yay!

But I also found out I have to work this Sunday, so I'm sorry but I will not be able to play the match. Hopefully I can play in future games, and you can find a replacement-replacement for Sunday.
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge

I should be able to make it to the sunday game. Do we have someone to fill in for Luggage/Pyro?
Title: Re: Highlander Challenge
Post by: SaumonFrAgile on September 19, 2010, 10:11:45 AM
People available for this game:
(X: 0% chance of being there, O: 95% chance or more of being there)

Crazydog     O
Hare Doctor  X
Saumon       O
Taso         O
Rally        O
Slimez       ?
Disco        O
Luggage      X
Zak          O
Shifty       X
dimkris      X

So technically we're short 2-3 players. According to ladder rules, we can have up to 3 mercenaries, 4 if the opponent agrees, so we're not out of the game yet... We just have to get people quick, as the match starts in less than 2 hours.

So our opponents are trying to set up the match for this Sunday (can't check the hour because the site is f*ing down again).

Also I will most likely spend my Saturday training, and I hope to get enough people to do team practice.

I need to know who can be there ASAP, and if you can't be there tell me when you can, so at worst we can try to reschedule.

Yes, we have to have a scheduled match before Monday, or a default time will be given to us. But the match can be played Sunday if I understand the rules.

Speaking about rules, they remind everyone on their website to check them out so there is no problem. I would be especially cautious about the "everyone MUST record a demo" one.

If you can link me to the exact rules for demo recording, etc., I can write a script for all y'all.

Edit:
All I could find was "Every player has to record Demos", in which case all you have to do is type 'record DEMONAMEHERE' in the console when you want to start it (i.e. after joining the server). It will stop automatically when you close TF2, or you can type 'stop' in the console when you want to stop recording.

I also just noticed that all the teams in our group are US teams, and we are listed as an 'international' team. :P Maybe someone should change that?

Well technically we are international since not everyone on the team is from the US, but i can still change it.

Pretty sure I can make it for a Sunday match. Not pretty sure what time it starts. Looks like 14:00 ET?

Yeah, I live in Canada, so we're technically international. :P
Now about the server, I'm trying to figure out a way to get a server running if they can't provide it. More on this later.

I'll try to not be late this time. Also think I won't run natasha anymore, since I remember getting outgunned a few times by the other team's heavy.

We learned two things after today: Our server can handle competitive play and ALWAYS email or add the opponents leader to your friends list.

I'm glad everyone showed up today though, besides rally  but he's good to go now. I'm going to try and schedule the next match this Saturday, since I don't have class, is that good with everybody?

That date was rejected.

They proposed October 8th at 8pm Eastern Time. (Friday)

I wouldn't be able to make it until just after the 15 minute grace period.

Its not the best time but I could make it.

I heard a rumor that these new items won't be allowed in the highlander tournament, although I haven't seen an official word on it yet (in case anyone was thinking of buying a pack for this reason).

Please let us know if you can make it on Friday around 8pm EST. So far me and hare can (as long as we can offer a time 30 minutes later than they asked, then I can make it.)

If we can't find 7 more who can make it around then soon, we'll have to come up with a new time.

On the match page, they say the proposed time is in New-York time, so that would make it 8pm NY time. I'll try to make it so it's 2 AM CEST the next day (just in case it causes any trouble) if it's ok with you guys. Else we can try and put it on the week-end.

The following challenge request has been sent to you from: RaCio [League Administrator] for the 'Highlander Challenge: Week 3 (Group 150) - BIG vs Feared' game

"Because this match has not been scheduled by either of the teams, a default date has been set for this match.

They had 3 mercs, and they can only have 3 if we constent to it, and we didn't, so we won since they didn't have a team.

Just a reminder, our makeup match with actor is tonight @ 9pm easter, we're only playing granary.

One of the teams in our group (SMASH) dropped out so there is a good chance we finish in the top half of the group and advance.

However we lost to actor last night, and it turns out SMASH was dropped from the tournament so our group now has 3 teams. It looks like we wont be advancing to the next round.

Bummer. Though it's hard to believe that the team we actually played never had league experience before. Especially compared to most of our team that rarely if ever pugged.

Highlander's a fun mode though. We should consider having Highlander nights for our server.
