So, are we gonna put up a BF:BC2 server? The game is super tight and it's probably going to suck my life away when it comes out next week. It'd be nice to share that addiction on our own server. If more money is needed I get my tax return next week!
-
:iamwithstupid:
I already say... best selling fps of 2010, or will be soon.
-
I'm still undecided on buying this, but it seems that everyone else is, so a server does seem like it would't be a bad idea.
Anyone wanna try to convince me to buy the game? :P
-
I was wondering if TE would be getting involved in BF:BC2 server or otherwise. I'm definitely planning on picking it up so will be nice to see some familiar faces in the thick of it all. :-D

Here, watch this first: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/battlefield-bad-company-2-pc-walkthrough-gets-into-the-nitty-gri/
Other things to know.
1. Everything blows up, literally, everything. See that building there? Don't like it? Blow it up! Those trees blocking your view? Cut them down with your bullets!
2. The Medic class isn't a pussy helper class, they also are the heavy weapon class as they carry a huge machine gun.
3. Choice of where to spawn depending on where your squad mates are on the battlefield.
4. Makes MW2 look like shit in nearly everyway possible.
5. Bullets drop realistically over distance.
6. The engineer repairs vehicles and lays mines, but also gets a big damn rocket launcher.
Here, watch this for a primer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcZ3wXF3r14
** Hey, I just found out this thing has a single player campaign too. I had no idea it even ventured outside of multiplayer.

I think our server box has a bunch of idle capacity right now so shouldn't need extra $ to host the game on our servers.
Do Crazydog/others who actually know something about servers disagree?
-
We do have capacity for the sever.
from the last talk we had we have at least 32 empty slots available, maybe more.
Game will max out at 32v32, but i suggest we start at 16v16 and see how things work out for a few months.
-
We don't have a certain number of slots, per say. It depends on what game we are running.
We could probably run 4 more Half Life 1 based servers (CS 1.6, TFC, etc.) with 32 slots just fine, as those don't use hardly any resources, since the technology is 12 years old.
We'd have to find out what kind of hardware is recommended for a BC2 server. If its more than a Source server, we probably wouldn't be able to handle a large one.

Actually from what I've read and seen the game maxes out at 32 players not 32 v 32. So a full match will only consist of 16v16. I wish it was 32v32 though like bf1942 and bf2.

According to this:
http://aperturegames.com/listnews.php?story=bad-company-2--no-mods-dedicated-server
And other places, we won't be able to host a BC2 server on our box. They aren't releasing the dedicated servers to the public, but you can rent a dedicated server from a GSP that they have selected.

Actually, A few months ago the PS3 early beta ended and the game slightly delayed. That was when an official press release said they were working on 32v32, however they did not say which platforms. This looks to be correct as EA's site and retailers are not listing total player counts.
The server thing is news to me, that pisses me off. We finally get a BF game after years on the PC and they fuck us again.
Buy the game from us, and then pay us to rent it to you so you can play... WTF? is this fucking WOW? Blizzard wannabies :angelfire:
This is the first game I bought through steam, it will never happen again.
-
That kinda sucks, but they did come through on having dedicated servers, so I'm not gonna bitch too much.
Crazy, how much are those?
-
I haven't shopped around, but the hosting company that I bought my L4D2 server from is pre-odering BC2 servers for $1.24/slot. Compare that to $0.79/slot for TF2, (But TF2 can cost as much as $4/slot for better hardware), $1.50/slot for L4D2, and $0.79/slot for World at War.
-
Well if the server info about BC2 is correct than we can't afford a server. Not enough funds the way our stuff is now.
-
So, I bought the game today. I thought when the said the beta would last until the 25th, they mean through the 25th. (They meant 11am on the 25th).
One thing I DID notice though, is that it has a native G15 program, and according to what I've read on the innernette, it's pretty kick ass.
-
If there is ANYTIME for extra slots...it's now. The game is most popular upon release and we'll have to try to grab players who can fill the server. I'm ok with dropping the CS Pub in order to fill out a full BC2 game. GG will always be up...but now would be the time for start planning on a BC2 server imo.

Yeah I did the same thing. Got it yesterday around 1 PM and was wondering why the beta wouldn't connect. Woops too late!
-
What VIP said. This is going to be the next big PC shooter, making room for it should really be a priority.
Bummer you guys missed out on the Beta. I played it for about 6 or 7 hours total. I couldn't escape the feeling that all my progress was going to be lost, so I didn't play much more than that.
-

That wouldn't make a difference. We're not paying for each individual server, we're paying for an entire server. We HAVE to rent the BC2 server from a Game Server Provider, as that is the only way that DICE is distributing it. I'm sure someone will leak the dedicated server files, but until then, we can't host a server without paying for it. Dropping one of our current servers wouldn't save us any money.
-
So we're paying for one server now? Like one single physical box?
-
Correct. We can host any game we want, as long as the dedicated server files are publicly available.
-
Well, I don't think enough funds will be allocated to cover an extra server. So, I guess we wait until someone makes the files public...it's important that we jump on it asap.
-
It was leaked tonight, so I played through an hour and a half of the SP. So far, from what I've seen of the MP, it will be MUCH better than the SP.
-
Ima likin what Ima seein
-
Well, the Singleplayer wasn't so great. In the gamut of modern war FPSs, it's near the bottom. I hope to god the MP makes up for it.
-
I have this feeling that you didn't get final code on the SP. The couple of reviews that are out don't mention any of the AI problems that you talked about with me.
-
Well, I'll see.
-
Just a brief note here. The other night somebody (I can't remember who) was concerned about the size of the game. It's not 15GB, it's 6GB. A statement from one of the Dice guys said that 15GB is what they were estimating early in the development before any kind of compression. So, to whoever it was that was worried about a 15GB download, fear not! It's only 6GB.
-
The game is unlocked and ready to download now. Start it up if you can! See you on the battlefield! :-D
-
OH COME ON!!! I went to class, came home, still downloading. 92%!! HURRY THE HELL UP!!! GAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yeah im probably going to buy this game at Gamestop within the next few weeks, also we need a Battlefield channel for vent.
-
Made
Now just to finish some homework and I can get on dat shit.
-
Well got my DL started once I got home from work. Pulling down around 1.5 M/S and at 25% after about 20 mins or so, hopefully within an hour or so.
-
In case anyone's interested, a few of us (Mach, Mustard, Your Way, Turd Sandwich, me) got together and got a server.
My performance in game is so much better there than on any other server I've been on.
To find it, just search for "The Unnamed BC2 server", and you should find it. (That name is (hopefully) only temporary).
-
nice setup, what game types is it setup for?
-
Well, BC2 only supports running one game mode at a time. By default, it runs Rush, but it can be changed by any of the admins (people who helped pay for it).
-
Well if the server files get leaked and we can put a server up I got no problem doing so. Just let me know.

Yeah we should try squad deathmatch sometime too since that is designed for 16 people. Anyways now we just need to get this sucker filled up! It seemed to randomly fill at times yesterday to around 11-13 folks but never all the way to 16 usually. Hopefully we can grab more to jump on to it b/c as Crazydog said it has very good latency.
-
I'm looking at it right now, and there's 15 random people in it. :P
Also, the reason that it was stuck at 12 people the other day was because reserved slots work stupidly in BC2. Basically, since we had 5 reserved slots, only 11 other people (excluding us 5) could get in. Or something like that. I removed the reserved slots, which is why it's full right now.

Excellent! :sunny:

In case anyone's interested, here's an easy way to add the server to your favorites:
1) Go to My Documents\BFBC2\
2) Open GameSettings.ini
3) Look for a line that starts with "FavoriteGames="
4a) If that line isn't there, or it is empty, replace it with this:
FavoriteGames=3296450406,3a09f509-73c6-4c29-b108-1cc88453e4db,The Unnamed BC2 server! Vanilla!;
4b) If the line exists and it has entries (you have favorite servers), just add "3296450406,3a09f509-73c6-4c29-b108-1cc88453e4db,The Unnamed BC2 server! Vanilla!;" after the semicolon at the end of the line
5) The server SHOULD show up in your favorites! yay! :P

Thanks for that walk through Crazydog. I am in the process of downloading it as we speak. Maybe I will be able to get in game tomorrow sometime.
