I'm going to buy a small (size) system to run *nix on, so I can have my own webserver so I don't need to pay for any hosting for anything small I'll ever be doing.
I'm not going for the best components, and I really don't want to spend a lot of money.
I've picked out these parts:
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811190094
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128357
RAM: Recycling 2GB of RAM from my desktop (It's up to 6GB now)
CPU: I'm just going to take my old P4 1.8 GHz out of my really old computer and stick it in there.
HDD: I have an old 5400RPM 512kB cache 8.4 GB drive which is WAY more than enough I need for a *nix server.
Total: $143.56 (cheaper than my monitor! :P)
Any suggestions? Recommendations?

where are you going to host this server at?
-
At my school where I have the 30down/15up connection.

nice. Would you have a static IP or are you going to need to keep updating DNS to keep a name with the right IP?
-
by *nix I assume you mean Unix or Linux. Have any idea which OS your going to use yet?

I'm thinking of going with Ubuntu server, since I mostly have experience with Debian and Ubuntu.

Bah. I just remembered my P4 is a Socket 478, and the other 478 Motherboard out there doesn't support the processor (cause it's too old), or the faster RAM that I have.
Guess I gotta find a cheap processor.

Ubuntu is probably a good choice...Walmart was looking at Ubuntu a while back and may know a little about it.
