anyone got experience with both? I currently run an original amd 64 proc with XP x32 on an old AGP video card, that seems to do fine with CS but won't do the extra stuff for EVE that I like... no worries. but my wife finally gave me a go ahead to get a better SMALLER box so I'm lookin at the ASUS small form factor rigs to keep her happy but I still want to have a good graphix card.
I've got MSDN access to all the OS's so the choice is there, and I'm definitely going with an 64 bit proc, but have yet to play with a 64 bit OS...
anyone on a 64 bit OS? seen any issues?
this is the box I was thinkin... if someone has something "GREENER and QUIETER" let me know ... I want it to be able to handle what I do. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856110057

I run Vista Ultimate 64bit and have no issues.
-
I have been running 64-bit Vista Home Premium for around 4 months and have had no issues whatsoever. Rock stable so far (fingers crossed). CPU is E8400.
If you do go with Vista and 64-bit in particular, quickly check that all your key peripherals and programs are supported. Luckily I have no problems but know that is the one area people still struggle with. I did have to stop using Zone Alarm though since they don't support 64-bit OS.
For any new build, highly recommend 64-bit OS so you can use 4GB and higher RAM.

Vista Ultimate 64 here too...No probs. C2Q 6600 and 8 gigs of 800mhz ddr2
I wonder if I gave my wife the go ahead, she would get a smaller box?
:-D

ok... so I'm prolly gonna get it.
Does anyone have problems with ... Office 2007, CS:S, EVE...
shit... thats about all I really care about, I can force the rest of the shit I need and Bit Torrent anything else really.

one more question before I'm done....
AMD vs. INTEL ...
any real big diff right now?
-
No problems with office 2007. Get Intel - AMD is still playing catch up.
-
I have had no issues at all with any programs.

unless you plan to OC. I've always had better luck and results OC'ing with AMD.
-
The Intel Core 2 chips overclock like you would not believe.
-
Highly recommend Intel right now. Much better processors and amazing OC potential. E8400 is a good pick and is OCable to ~4GHz on air (3rd party cooler). Only catch is that new sockets will be introduced next year but an E8400 or Q9450 will give you a few good years (2-3) at least depending on how much processing power you need.

it is done. :) kids inherited a monster of a game box with a 500watt ps and my ex is just gonna LOVE the electric bill if she leaves it on like everything else in the house... snicker.
I went 64 proc and 64 OS with a small form factor

s3500t series from HP. 200w processor and I maxed out the video card and slapped 3 gigs of ram in her. does fair dinkum. and much quieter than my old box. love it. 745 delivered to my door.

Hypo, What kind of card could you squeeze in that box? Forget Ultras and prob even regular 8800 - too long.
The 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9500GS aint too bad but be prepared for video lag in CS @1024x768..
I just went through this with an off the shelf HP and it wasnt even that small. And from that experience I can tell you that HP only puts the minimum reqs for a psu and even their better ones at the time (6 mos ago) were only 350 watts. No good for cards that need the extra juice.
Jz - Some folks like to oc, but why bother if you only play games? Get a good fast chip and vid card to start with. The stuff that is available now price wise it really makes no sense unless youre trying to get some sort of record. From experience the extra mhz isnt worth the wear and tear along with the possibilities of premature failure. Also the added expense (liquid) and noise (fans) of heavy duty cooling.

Really, the only reason to overclock is when your hardware is at the end of it's useful lifespan, to give you a little extra gaming power until you decide you HAVE to upgrade...and, yes, core 2's overclock like flaming bats outta hell (with the right cooling).

well... dammit. I bought about a month too early, mine shipped with the 8500 GT. and now the 9500 GS is out... fuckers. guess I'll save some duckets and buy up... as long as it will fit in the box.
-
you should have just bought parts and built it yourself.

I put vista ultimate x64 on my machine at work and had a bit of trouble with my nvidia card with it. I'm running a quadro card there(quadro nvs 440), so its a different driver than the geforce chips, but the 64 bit driver would freeze the pc every 10 seconds for a fraction of a second. even replaced the card (had a 1x card, replaced with a x16 card).
did the same exact thing with the x64 linux drivers, but the 32 bit (on both win and linux) didn't do it.
if you ever plan on putting more than 3 gigs of mem in a box though, you'll want a 64 bit os. with a fat vid card (512M or higher) you're gonna lose that from your available memory map (plus some memory for other devices that need their memory mapped). dual cards mean even more mem lost.
PAE would be a way around it, but 32 bit windows doesn't support PAE correctly (even in server OS's).
unless the games or programs you want to run are written for 64 bit you're not going to see any benefit from them, but you will see a benefit on your over-bloated Vista OS. :puke:

so I left CSS out on 1440x900 with decent mid graphics and cranked my DODS settings back one notch and the magenta went away, and I got some decent kills on a flooded server, so I'm adjusting well.
of course I went on the GG server after getting blasted in DODS and pwnt a lot of new blood on there. it was hysterical...
AND EARL WAS THERE!!!!!!!!!!! GO SUEDE BABY!!!!
