Title: Network Problem
Post by: HongKongPhooey on April 15, 2008, 09:45:43 AM
Came home from work last night and my son had somehow managed to put the new pc in hibernate mode.  When I got it back to normal mode I could not get an internet connection.  I tried toggling between both network cards but it still came back with something along the lines of 'unidentified network connection' and 'local connection only'.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  I am running Vista 64bit Ultimate edition.  I tried rebooting but to no avail.  When I run ipconfig I get nothing ip addresses.  I cannot even connect to the router which I know works cause the other computer and my DVR are connected and online.

Usaually that stuff comes back after a reboot. I've never heard of it not coming back from hibernation but it is Vista.

So I have to ask.  Is this a full legal copy of Vista or the one from the FTP Server?

i am currently having that problem also and believe that if you connection has too many splitters on the line it will degrade the signal try bringing the router to where the connection enters the home and try it there and see if that corrects the problem

The thing is that your internal router should give you an IP address no matter if you high speed connection is workig or not.  I can unplug my cable modem and my router will still give out IP Addresses.

I do not have a modem, just a router.  I have two computers side by side, an xbox360 and my Directv HDDVR connected to the router.  The other three devices connect no problem, its just the Vista computer than cannot get out.  Like I said before, I cannot even access the router.  Was hoping for some sort of solution other than reformatting.

I assume your not getting an ip address? if thats the case i would check to make sure the tcp/ipv4 protocol under the adapter is still installed, and none of the wake on lan settings are enabled, i've seen a couple vista pc's that get screwy with those turned on

If the TCP/IP V6 is installed try removing that

I am pretty sure that is installed.  I will try removing that when I get home tonight.

can also check the winsock configuration. I know if it gets corrupt you can't do much in terms of network.

try those out

I feel your pain Death, I still have not gotten my resolved either.  I tried the 2 things from Widow's post but no luck.  I'm gonna try to reformat and see what happens.  The only thing I will lose through the reformat is the steam and COD4 but those can be reinstalled quickly.

Deathhaven, I wish you lived closer as I would have you drop it off or I could pick it up from you and try to get it working.  I keep looking everyday on the MS Knowledgebase, but I keep coming up with no new things to try.

I work with Citrix and VPN tunnels using SSL vs. IPSEC tunnels.  our VPN from citrix sticks a shim in the tcp stack in all OS's.  However, now that I am running our first vista laptop in the domain, I've noticed vista gets really dumb when it comes to communication between wireless and hardwired, and the stack does not recover well AT ALL when you do funky things to it midstream.  I was frozen on the GG server the other night.  I alt-tab'd out and came back to nothing, but couldn't kill the STEAM or anything to make the game go away so I yanked the plug and rebooted.  haven't had it happen again, but vista is STILL needing some tweaks.

oh and SP1 is just as big as the friggin OS's original install if that tells you anything about how buggy it might be.

sheeesh.  game box is staying at XP FTW.

Lol, not to bring up an old subject but I finally got it working.  Of course it is after I reformatted.  I tried numerous fixes that I found on line then I found this website:  http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread73818-18.html

To summarize my problem I could not get the pc to see my router.  Basically all I did last night was disable TCP/IP, IPv6, change the TCP/IP, IPv4 properties by manually entering the ip, gateway and dns addresses.  For the primary DNS address I put in the same address as the gateway.  When that didn't work, I went to plan be which was shutdown the PC and shut down the powersupply like someone had suggested in last page of that thread.  Turned the power supply back on, restarted the PC and bam I had internet.  Still do not understand the logic of shutting down the power supply but at least it works.
