Title: Converting FRAPS videos to a more manageable size?
Post by: crazydog on February 13, 2008, 05:16:12 PM
So I've reocrded some videos with FRAPS, that are 1-3 gigs in their raw states.

I've tried converting them with...some programs, but none of them are converting and compressing them in a way that other programs will like. Sometimes it only works in WMP, sometimes only in VLC, and sometimes only in Quicktime.

Anyone have any suggestions for what I should be using to compress it?

Well it all depends how much compression you are really talking about. Remember general rule of thumb is the more compression the lower the quality.

How long is the video?
Are you editing it at all?
Why are you trying to make the file smaller?

Convert it to the Xvid format.  The best way to do this is:

1. Download and install the Xvid Codec
2. Download and install VirtualDub
3. Open the Video in VirtualDub
4. Video -> Compression
5. Choose XVid and press OK.
6. Audio -> Full Processing Mode
7. Audio -> Compression
8. MPEG Layer-3 56 KBit/s
9. Save as AVI

And there you have it, an Xvid codec'd video with MP3 Audio. ;)
