Not exactly sure why this happens, though it does happen occasionally. If I alt+tab out of CS:S to my desktop, and try to alt+tab back to it - I get an error. I'll take a screenshot the next time it happens.

It happens to me, only if I stay on desktop for an extended period of time. My guess is that it's you don't have enough RAM to run the other programs and CS:S at the same time so it crashes on you.

Video card drivers will do it also, RAM sounds like the right call though. I have 2 gigs in my PC and never have that problem. You can also alocate a certain amount of RAM to counter strike so that it stays in memory for you. Might help your problem. But update your video drivers also because you play CS at one resolution but your desktop is at another. When you switch your could be causing an issue with the video card. Allocating the RAM coud be a good start.
Go to steam and click my games
Right click counter strike source and click properties
click on launch options
type in
-heapsize 524288 if you have 1 GIG of memory
-heepsize 1048576 if you have 1.5-2gig of memory
