Title: LINUX ANYONE?
Post by: Earl on June 26, 2007, 08:22:51 PM
I've recently become fed up with microsoft and they're piss poor offerings of operating systems(by recently I mean in the past 5 or so more yrs)...I've been researching linux and and it seems to be a viable candidate (of the only 2 out there for pc that I know about...lol)....for initially my secondary PC if that works out well then possibly for my gamin rig!!!....I'm basically just lookin fer any input any of you might have regarding this idea....thanks.... :thebirdman:...in advance lmao

I wouldnt jump feet first into Linux. It used to be that many of microsoft's and other vendors programs and hardware had little support and compatibility issues in linux... Things have changed, but not fast enough for my liking. I would suggest doing a dual boot setup, using both windows and linux on seperate partitions or hard drives. Play your games on windows and do everything else on linux. It's not hard to do and there are some excellent tutorials on the web.

I use a guy laptop for presentations that has the dual boot with Linux.  I have Ubuntu from a start up disc, and it isn't that hard to get use to.  Is there a way that I could partition my hard drive while I have an existing xp pro OS?  Plus, I dont want to buy partition magic or anything that costs over 20$.  If any of you guys can get some free stuff, I would be a happy camper.  Free is nice plz.   :notworthy:

If you want an alternative for gaming, you can use an immulator with Linux, but after doing that you dont really get the speed that everyone wants Linux for.  And i saw a youtube video of someone getting CS:Source running on a MAC OSX laptop i think.  Bad thing with Mac is that you get the crap hardware with the good OS.  :|

Thx fer the feedback....I'm mainly looking into this for my secondary PC which is used for: surfing, spreadsheets, text editing, photo manipulation...etc....I would not upend my gamin rig for any reason!!!!! at this point...lol I can't go without my games!!!!!......but from what I have read the latest disbursments of linux don't come with anything but there are equivalent programs avaliable to substitute for photoshop, word/office, outlook,....etc...I still need to do alot of reading but thanx again fer the input!!!!! :headbang1:
