I was gonna put up Saber Marionette J, but didn't want to clutter the list up too much. Saber Marionette J made me cry the first time I watched it and I'm not afraid to say it!

Have you seen all three series? If not maybe I can set it so you could get them off me.

I'm sorry, didn't enjoy the whole "WHOLE BUNCH OF PUNCHES THAT DON"T HIT......OOOPPS YOUR HEAD EXPLODES!" It was so bad it was funny, kind of anime.

It's more about the lust for power, it's downfalls and the redemption of evil more than the kung-fu...that's why it's good.

I love the show, granted I watched it back in the early 90's in Italian, honestly much better than in english.
The Meaning of the show was about fighting for justice, even if it meant sacrificing yourself to prove a point and give a friend a chance
to see the opponent's techiniques and skill. As for the fighting, yes it's a bit out there, but that's what's great about anime in general.

This is a link to a clip of one of the best episodes, in Japanese, with eng subs. Ken's eye's are shut since he's currently blind from a prev fight.

I liked the anime History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. I thought it was a decent fighting anime. Heroic Age was alright to.

Fist of the North Star was the very first anime I ever saw, so props to Hitman, however crap it was when I watched it again a couple years ago.

I second Akira, Evangalion's ok, but there's way too much of the main character being a whiny bitch.

The ones I recommend that haven't been mentioned are:
Karas
Ghost in the Shell 1,2, and both series
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Tokyo Godfathers
Millenium Actress
Paranioa Agent
Cowboy Beebop
Samurai Champloo
Jin-roh: Wolf Brigade
Tekonkinkreet
Origin
Memories (3 shorts written by Otomo Katsuhiro (Akira, Steamboy) and directed by others)
The Animatrix (Specifically Boy's Story and Second Rennaisance part 1 and 2)
Steamboy was decent, but coming from Otomo Katsuhiro, it was a bit of a disappointment

These films aren't anime but they use rotoscoping, a technique of animating over live film, and are also excellent:
A Scanner Darkly
Rennaisance
Waking Life
Waltz With Bashir

Because I can, while I'm here I'll recommend some good samurai flicks, because they're along a similar vein:
Seven Samurai
Ran
Yojimbo
47 Ronin
When The Last Sword Is Drawn
Twilight Samurai
Love and Honour
The Hidden Blade
the Lone Wolf And Cub series
the Samurai series

That's all for now, I'll have to have a look through my collection once I unpack...I'm sure there's more

No Zatôichi for Samurai movies?
Perfect Blue was the second most fucked up anime I've ever seen! The first would have to be Serial Experiments Lain (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Experiments_Lain"). I watched that bad boy fan dubbed! Talk about FUCKED UP! I think my head exploded at the end, not unmuch like in First of the North Star.
I watched Memories, I didn't really enjoy two of them. The haunted space ship was the only one worth watching.
Cowboy Beebop I've heard many good things about, I've just never took the time to watch it since that I know how it ends.
Two anime I'd like to watch some day are Trigun (http://"Trigun") and Rurouni Kenshin (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rurouni_Kenshin"). Rurouni Kenshin I've seen the first couple of episodes of, and Trigun I've seen the first.
Tenchi Muyo (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenchi_Muyo!") is another good one, from what I've seen (first 12-15 episodes, it's been awhile.)

Cowboy Bebop is an awesome series, though I haven't seen it all. You can watch the episodes on Adult Swims website (unless you live in Canada, then you need a proxy).

Bebop is my favorite ever. I mostly stick to the more mainstream fare like that and Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist, Paranoia Agent. Mostly stuff that they played on Adult Swim, some of which I knew before it aired there though.

I've had friends try to turn me onto other stuff that's less known, but I haven't had much luck there. I just think a lot of it is terrible.
