PATA is the original 40 pin connection for a hard drive.

@Baltika, yeah, it is. I have 5 drives in there right now, and I'd like to bring it down to 4, and make that 4th one bigger + faster than the two it's replacing. :P

I'm not ONLY looking for space (Recording raw HD takes up a lot of space! I have 2 500s, a 250, a 300, and an 80, and I maybe have 100-250 gigs free. :P. The TV shows are deleted as needed, though, and they're taking up a few hundred gigs.), but also to get rid of my obsolete PATA drives.

Well here's another question.

If I'm going to end up getting a new motherboard/processor/ram/HSF, what should I do with my old ones?

I was considering selling them to offset the cost a bit, but I also have wanted to build a PC used to just record TV shows. The software uses a nice chunk of RAM and CPU power, and it'd be nice to have it on another system. I already have a case to use (It's an ATX case about 1/3 the size of a mid-tower), and I'll have those two hard drives left over...If I did that I wouldn't NEED any pci slots on the new motherboard.

Oh so it's like the flat ribbon cable...gotchya.

Crazy, If I were you I would definitely get one of the largest single HDs available right now and maybe use an 40-80GB SSD for the OS.  You could always sell one of the other HDs and transfer the data from it to the new one.  I'd be willing to buy either of your drives =)

Oh god no. I'm not going to buy an SSD now. They're still too ungodly expensive. I mean, there are cheap off-brand ones, but I don't think it'd be too smart to go with one of those.

Again, I'm not sure if I'm gonna sell any of the old stuff or keep it and make an HTPC type thing.

Since I have this new rig I think I'm going to bring my old rig from home and throw a 1 TB HD in it to make it a movie/tv show center.  It has everything in it already except the hard drives.  But yea, SSDs are really expensive and I say frig em until I can get an 80GB one for under 100$.

I decided instead of going all out and upgrading my entire system, I'll just replace one of my 500GB HDDs with a 1.5 TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136351 $99 w/ coupon code ($0.15/GB)).

So....I've got a spare 500GB HDD to sell. $43 anyone? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148136

Seems reasonable to me (replacing the .5 w/ the 1.5).
The price on the .5 seems reasonable to me...I'd make you an offer except I'm having trouble filling up my 1 TB drive.

Heh. Well, I'm in no rush to sell it. Doesn't hurt to have it around for emergencies.

I was looking, and my recorded TV shows are only taking up about 350GB on 3 different hard drives, and that's about a month of recordings. If I dedicate my old 500 (the one I'm keeping in the system) to recording TV shows....

Anyway, yeah, 1.5 is more than enough. I'm planning on moving both 500GB drives to it (711.6 GB), and still having 638.4 GB left for other crap. :P (It's taken me almost 2 years to almost fill the two 500s. :P (I have 218.4 GB free, but that doesn't include 154.1 GB of TV shows.))
