Title: headset?
Post by: Baltika (#9) on August 30, 2009, 01:13:17 PM
Any recommendations on headsets with built in microphone?

Never owned one before...have been using speakers and a stand microphone.

Looking for something that won't be too hot on my ears (I get hot easily).
Something that has a mute button would be nice.
I don't know if there's anything out there, but if there's something that has the ability to switch off and divert back to my desktop speakers w/o having to mess with the plugs in the back, that would be awesome.

Looking for your experiences and products that you own.

1) Do NOT get the AudioFX Force Feedback headset. It's a good headset, except that it falls apart after about 2 months.

2) I suggest buying a headset for $50. That seems to be the best price:quality ratio.

3) Do NOT get a headset with a USB connector. They are more expensive and do not produce better quality sound than analog connectors. The signal has to be converted back to analog anyway.

4) Try to find one with a removable microphone. That way you can wear the headset as headphones away from your computer without looking crazy.

5) I picked up the Creative "Fatal1ty" headset at Fry's when I gave up on the AudioFX ones I had (see #1). I've had it for about a year and a half, and it's a great headset. It has a removable microphone, which is completely flexible, and it is very comfortable, while still not letting a ton of outside sound in. I can wear these for hours with no discomfort. It also has a toggle switch for the mic. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826158082

6) It never hurts to check out the best rated headsets on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010290707&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=RATING

I have both the Tritton AX360 and also the Razer Megalodon and both are great.  The Tritton is 5.1 Surround and the Razer is 7.1 Surround.

i like em, sit nice on your head, comfy, they look like ear muffs, but just big enough to go around the ears without sitting on them (if that makes sense) only block out outside noise during game play (i dont play too loud, just loud enough where i can bare it and drowns out my GF), mic folds up so it just looks like headphones, then you can fold it out when needed, but as it was said i use the USB connection you cant use speakers, i tested it with speakers and plugging the headset into the audio jacks in the front and speakers still work, I could be wrong but from what ive heard is it simulates 5.1, but you need the Usb end for it to do so, ill get back to you later after some game play see if its any different

Whatever you get, try to get something with at least 5.1 surround and a mic.

They don't make those...the voice of the wife has the highest signal-to-noise ratio of any audio system made (love you honey :-D )

I have never had any issues with my Tritton.  Have had it for over 2 years and still works great.

Yeah, thats the weirdest thing...shoulda RMA'd the whole thing, maybe something inside is frying it, but it's too late for that now I'm sure.

I use the Razer Carcharias,  They are a step below the Barracudas and a step above the piraniahs.  Very good sound quality compared to what I was used to.  Has a inline Volume control which makes it nice to adjust on the fly in game.

I was on a budget so got them as a referb unit off ebay...and I have been amazed by how well they work!!!   The next step is to follow in videos foot steps and get the Megladons once I get a better job.  Also you can find the Logitech Clear Chat Pro Comforts on sale at Radio Shack for $30 some times and they are a very nice "lower" end unit!!!

Seems like built in mics are an issue no matter what you buy.

wow...

i've been holding off.  I can find the Barracudas locally w/o having to order them, but they got horrible reviews on the tigerdirect site.

i might just bring my sony headphone home and use my desktop mic.

i was really just looking for something to use so I can disable push-to-talk in Vent w/o everyone having to listen to the game on my PC in the background.

I swear by Logitech. Was using the MX 700 before I got the MX 1000 before I got the MX 5000. Now I'm rocking the MX Performance, which is very nice.

Just bought Cyba Snipa 5.1 on amazon (bought there cause they actually had the tri cool 120mm blue fans in wanted for my 902) they are a cheap 5.1 headset so figure I'ed give'em a whirl, yes they are a real 5.1 headset, not a fake one like my plantronics lol, they were 49.99 + Shipping + Tax (woo hoo, even have to pay tax online now), so i shall give a brief review in the next few days, only thing i don't like is they are red...99% of the stuff for my rig is blue lol

Yeah, think I'm going to replace mine with a pair of the Razer Megaladon's at tax time. Read a lot of good reviews on them and they are 7.1 so why not. I'll downgrade my Trittons to the PS3 since I don't need a mic for that.
