...in a half wooden tower...don't ask.

I'd love to have a wooden tower case.  I'd build one (one of my other hobbies is woodworking), but I'm concerned about venting it, and catching the thing on fire when it gets too hot.

I'm going to have to spend some time working on this...

Wow...something I'd never seriously thought about, but there are a ton of images on google...
some really nice (and some not so nice).
Sliding doors.  DVD fronts.
Wow.

I might even have enough left over wood from my computer desk (white oak) to make a matching computer case...

Thanks for the inspiration Slacker...
If you don't see me in TF2 for a couple of weeks, you'll know why.

Hi all I suppose that my first post should be about my rig so here goes.

Antec Super Lanboy case
Ultra 500W modular PS
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.8Ghz
2GB of PC8500 OCZ ram
integrated 10/100/1000 nic
Abit Mobo with 680i chipset
250GB Seagate HDD
Asus 9800GT Ultimate

I built it this past winter when my clan members got tired of me having an old Athlon machine in a half wooden tower...don't ask.

I plan on revamping her as soon as I can,  although I have to many hobbies to support them all right now.

this is a pretty, uhm, aged setup
Out of curiosity, how many FPS do you get in TF2?

Yeah, that processor looks like a serious bottleneck.

It varies between 70-90fps...The video card helps eliviate some pressure from the processor but in a full on game it can have spikes of 180fps if there is a ton of explosions and 31 other people reaking havoc  :headbang:

I'm just going to upgrade to an E8400, with 4gb of OCZ Reaper when the time comes, and that should help out tremendously

The numbers don't sound right

Higher the FPS (frames per second), the better.  If you can maintain over 60, then doing very well.  I would be surprised if you get FPS over 60 consistently.  I was asking to see if the processor is indeed a bottle-neck.  I think it would be, but you never know so was curious...there have been so many debates on how much processing power you really need (vs. RAM vs. graphics card) to play games, so your system is a curious test case...

Sorry had a Tard Attack earlier, I'm sorry for the wrong numbers earlier that was my pings not my fps I'm guessing I posted ala my dumb butt using a few background apps that killed my pings while I was doing the test using net_graph. :headbang:

I ran the net_graph command again and got an FPS of 83,  I was the only one in the game and there was nothing major going on,  I then used the cl_showfps 2 command and got 84 fpsm again I was alone in the server.  These still seem kinda high for my setup,  I guess I'll get a more conclusive answer tonight when the server get populated.

Again I apologize for the wrong numbers.

It was a little chaotic in-game, but I think I heard you say ~30FPS.  I bet you can OC the shit out of your CPU (my recollection is that the 1.8Ghz would go up to about 3GhZ using fancy cooling solutions and mid 2s using decent / not expensive air cooling) so that may be the way to go before plonking down cash for a new CPU (may need new mobo with that)

Between google and perusing the newegg customer thoughts on your CPU, you will get a good idea of how far you can push it.  Sites like tomshardware and various TE folks (including myself) can walk you through over-clocking if that is of interest to you.

Duo Cores are an overclockers dream. Theres something about them that makes them work so well when pushed to the limit. Luggage is right, the 1.8 has been pushed up to 3 and remained stable, just make sure your cooling is sufficient. A good aftermarket CPU fan and heatsink will extend the useful life of that chip through overclocking and 3Ghz is where it's at for CPUs right now.

V.I.P., you really shouldn't have a need to upgrade the 8800GT (well, it is an XFX LOL)...just doing it to do it?
