I think how much you waste is really going to depend on how far away your head typically is from the monitor.  If you're right up next to it like I am, I wouldn't recommend anything above 22. But if you're got some space and the GPU to handle it, the skies the limit.

For some reason the sweet spot for graphics cards is the same as monitors.
I have a 19" that I bought two years ago for $180. (Of course it costs about $130 now).
In my opinion, $180 is the best price you get for the quality you get.

I reccomend Hanns G. Like I said, I've had this monitor for 2 years, and I've had 0 problems with it. Their monitors sell relatively cheaply, but they do not sacrifice ANY quality.

I'd be willing to sell the monitor I have if you are interested. I've been wanting to get a bigger one, but I can't seem to justify the expense. Selling the old one would help. :P

With monitors, there is such a thing as too big...22" would be the limit, but I really wouldn't want anything other than the 19" I have now. It's just the right size.

I think if you truly want a good gaming monitor, don't go below 23".  My 25" is GREAT.  You need a sufficient card to play intense games, but it's well worth it.  This Hanns-G is great quality and it was worth the 200$ spent on it to me.

I got a 23" acer 1080p monitor a few weeks back for 169.00. It's freaking gorgeous, though a tad big.
I recommend 19-22in widescreen. 1440*900 is a good 16*9 res that stays playable.

1440x900 is 16:10 :P

Whatever you do, get a 16:10 monitor. Buying a 16:9 is such a waste of money, since a 23" 16:9 will usually cost similarly to a 23" 16:10, although the 16:10 gives you more screen.
